What's Happening at Southview PS - Week 38, June 2026

<img src="/images/1ece4821-e131-41d2-8937-afa40dae9b3f?fingerprint=ppb20251217013257" alt="Land acknowledgement" width="413" height="323" style="width:413px;height:323px;display:inline-block"> <h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr">Growing, Learning and Achieving Together</h2> Hello Lynx Families!We are down to the final three weeks of the 2025-2026 school year and the students and staff are busier than ever with putting final touches on their learning and beginning to celebrate all that they have achieved! The following paragraphs describe what is happening around the school!The Southview ATOM and BANTAM/INTERMEDIATE School Track Team travelled to the Invista Centre on Tuesday June 2nd to compete in the Region 1 Qualifier. The results were impressive with many students putting in top notch performances and qualifying for the District Championships which will take place next week on Tuesday June 9th, 2026. As a matter of fact, Southview PS will be sending a team of approximately 40 students to the District Championships. Congratulations to all athletes and coaches on a terrific competition and best of luck to those who are competing on June 9th!Mr. Morrow has been coaching both the Recreational and Competitive Ultimate Frisbee Teams but he will be away on the Grade 8 Grad Trip on the day of the tournament so Ms. Hutcheson and Ms. Myers will be taking over coaching responsibilities on his behalf. Thank you toMr. Morrow for the time you have dedicated to preparing these teams for competition and to Ms. Hutcheson and Ms. Myers for ensuring that our students will be able to participate! The teams will be heading to the John Machin Soccer Pitch in Kingston on June 11th, 2026 to test their skills against other schools. Good luck to all athletes and coaches!Our Grade 3 & 6 students have mostly finished their participation in the EQAO assessment process and there is much positivity from both staff and students in terms of how it went. EQAO provides the province, our Board and the school with a snapshot of our progress in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy. We use this information to plan programming, professional learning and to provide direction with respect to our school improvement plans and goals. We are looking forward to using the information from these assessments to build on the excellence that already exists in our school! The Welcome to Kindergarten at Southview PS event took place on the evening of June 3rd, 2026 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and it was a terrific evening of information, activities and included a first school bus ride for many students. We are very much looking forward to welcoming the next generation of Southview students in September!<h3 class="editor-heading-h3" style="text-align: center;">Preparations for the 2026-2027 School Year</h3> <h3 class="editor-heading-h3">We are in the midst of the school structure, staffing and class organization processes for next year. We know that we will be working through a number of changes next year and this will impact how we organize each class. Information regarding your child's class placement and class teacher will be made via an email that will be sent to all families in August, approximately one week prior to the first day of school. We recognize that this is different from previous years but our new practice will align us with the process as it takes place in most other schools within the LDSB. More importantly, it will allow us time to consider adjusting class structures over the summer as we adapt to any changes or additions that occur during the summer months. We work very hard to balance many aspects of school life when we are organizing classes and staff. Each change has a knock on effect and we adjust accordingly. This month's topic is looking after the well-being of our young people.</li><li value="5" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr">The Maltby Centre has provided an updated wealth of information regarding their family and child support services, programs and workshops for Spring 2026.</li><li value="6" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr">Grade 8 Transition to Secondary School. Information regarding the process our Grade 8 students will follow to ensure a successful transtion to high school can be found below! </li><li value="7" class="editor-listitem" dir="ltr">Free Eye Exams (Free Glasses for Students in Kindergarten). Some of our students and staff are very sensitive to strong scents which can affect their health and well-being. As is usual at this time of the year, our calendar is full, students and teachers are working overtime and the school is a hive of "busyness" and excitement.Both the ATOM and BANTAM/INTERMEDIATE School Track Meet Qualifiers took place last week. These events were incredibly well organized by our Grade 6 Teaching Team. Students enjoyed a very positive experience and Southview PS will be represented by a talented group of athletes at the Regional Meet at CaraCo Field on June 2, 2026.The Junior and Senior Dodgeball Teams travelled to Selby Public School on May 1st, 2026 to compete against 3 other schools in their annual tournament. Both Southview teams came out on top after some very competitive and hard-fought matches! Well done to our athletes and coaches!A huge team of Southview runners travelled to NDSS for the Hawk Run on May 12, 2026. The group had an outstanding day with 4 of the 5 teams winning placement ribbons for their performance. Southview individual runners won first place in Senior Girls, second place in Senior Boys, while 3 runners in other divisions won third place ribbons and two other runners place 4th in their divisions. Well done to all athletes and their coaches!Mr. Babcock and Mr. Gallupe took 35 students in Grade 7 and 8 (one team played in the competitive division and one team played in the recreational division) to a Flag Football Tournament at Calvin Park School in Kingston. Both teams were a successful and had lots of fun. Students represented Southview very well and demonstrated terrific responsibility. Most students had never played in an organized football game, but did an amazing job! Mr. Gallup and Mr. Babcock were proud of all their efforts!Academically, our Grade 6 students have started their participation in the EQAO Assessment process by completing the required Literacy modules over the week of May 4th, 2026. Grade 6 will be completing the Math portion of the assessment and Grade 3 both Literacy and Math, at the beginning of June. We are proud of the our student's academic achievement and look forward to celebrating their accomplishments in the fall of 2026!Welcome to Kindergarten at Southview PS events will take place on the evening of June 3rd, 2026 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. We are very much looking forward to meeting all of our new young Southview Public School students!Just a reminder that all staff and the administration at Southview are participating in PA Day this coming May 29th, 2026.  The focus of the PA is the reporting process and the preparation of the final reports cards due to be distributed in June. There are no classes for students on Friday May 29th, 2026.<h3 class="editor-heading-h3" style="text-align: center;">Preparations for the 2026-2027 School Year</h3> <h3 class="editor-heading-h3">We are in the midst of the school structure, staffing and class organization processes for next year. We know that we will be working through a number of changes next year and this will impact how we organize each class. Information regarding your child's class placement and class teacher will be made via an email that will be sent to all families in August, approximately one week prior to the first day of school. We recognize that this is different from previous years but our new practice will align us with the process as it takes place in most other schools within the LDSB. More importantly, it will allow us time to consider adjusting class structures over the summer as we adapt to any changes or additions that occur during the summer months. We work very hard to balance many aspects of school life when we are organizing classes and staff. Each change has a knock on effect and we adjust accordingly. Once we announce classes in August, most changes should be accounted for as opposed to announcing in June and then having to notify families in the summer that plans have changed. </h3><h3 class="editor-heading-h3">Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to ensure the success of all students and staff at Southview PS.</h3> On May 28th, all students at Southview PS will be participating in the Jump Rope for Heart, Heart and Stroke Foundation fundraiser. As is usual at this time of the year, our calendar is full, students and teachers are working overtime and the school is a hive of "busyness" and excitement.A huge congratulations is extended to our Drama Club and their supervisors Jennifer Zwiers and Ashley Chapman. Families and students attended two performances of "The Wild Robot" on April 29th, 2026 and the quality of the production was overwhelming. The reviews are in and the decision is unanimous! MAGNIFICIENT! Complete with incredible dramatic performances, music, dancing and audience participation it was obvious from beginning to end that the amount of work that went into this project was awesome! We are incredibly proud of this team who deserve a big "thank you" for bringing joy and laughter to our school and community! Well done!Another annual event that provided a welcome diversion from the academic focus that we typically see at this time of year was the "Celebration of Dance" organized by Aline LaRochelle. The focus on movement, fun and fitness was evident on the day of the event as hundreds of students from Grades 2-6 gathered in the gym to participate in a dance celebration demonstrating a commendable level of skill and enthusiasm. The cheers of delight that each new song elicited from our young people made it clear that all teachers had spent time teaching their students the choreagraphy and exposing them to the upbeat tunes that accompanied the dances! A huge "shout out" to Ms. LaRochelle and all of the teachers for their committment to this well-received and worthwhile activity!Our Skills Ontario Construction Team travelled to Toronto on May 3/4 to participate in the Provincial Championships under the direction of their coach Matt Gallupe. The team had six hours to demonstrate their knowledge and skill, using nothing but wood and cardboard to build a scaled model of a home. The detail that the team included in their blueprint design, framing, roofing and interior structure was outstanding. We are incredibly proud of the achievement of these 4 students and Mr. Gallupe! They have acquired aptitudes and know-how that will serve them well into adulthood! Well done to all of you!On Friday May 1, 2026 our Jr and Sr Dodgeball teams consisting of students from Grade 5-8 travelled to Selby Public School to compete against students from 3 other schools (Selby, The Prince Charles and North Addington). Both Southview teams came out victorious after some heated matches! Mrs. Hutcheson and Mr. Babcock were proud of the resilience, perseverance and teamwork demonstrated by our students throughout the day. They represented our school with a high level of skill, sportmanship and maturity! Congratulations, Lynx!The Track and Field season has officially started with the 800 m and 1200 m qualifying races taking place on Monday May 4th and Wednesday May 6th. Both races were highly competitive with the winning runners demonstrating terrific times and an impressive level of skill and determination. On Wednesday and Thursday of the week beginning May 11th, the qualifying athletes for the other events will be decided upon at two highly anticipated track events. Our ATOM athletes compete on Wednesday and our BANTAM and SENIOR athletes on Thursday. We wish all of our athletes the best of luck and to our coaches and organizers, thank you for providing this oppporunity to our students! The Regional and District finals will take place at the Invista Centre on June 2nd and 9th respectively.Southview Public School is proud to be sending a team of more than 40 runners to the Hawk Run at NDSS on Monday May 11th, 2026. Thank you to our coaches and organizers and best of luck to all of our participating athletes!Thank you to the Napanee Family Of Schools for hosting our Grade 8 students at two big events held over the past week. The May Day Assembly took place at NDSS on Thursday May 7th. This event provided our students with a full day of activities at the high school as they continue their preparation for the transition to Secondary School in September of 2026. On Friday May 8th, The Prince Charles PS welcomed our Grade 8 students to a Careers Fair designed to bring awareness to options and opportunities for our students' futures!Just a reminder that our JK/SK and Grade 2 students will be participating in a Dental Screening on May 21/22, 2026 offered by Public Health. Parents have the option to opt out by following the instructions provided in the inforgraphic below.Academically, our Grade 6 students have started their participation in the EQAO Assessment process by completing the required Literacy modules over the week of May 4th, 2026. Grade 6 will be completing the Math portion of the assessment and Grade 3 both Literacy and Math, at the beginning of June. Pride Month Recognition in Limestone

The Limestone District School Board (LDSB) Education Centre, along with schools across the district, is recognizing Pride Month in the KFL&A region by flying the Progress Pride Flag for the remainder of the school year.The Government of Canada notes that the manner in which the Canadian flag is displayed is not governed by legislation. The guidelines provided are not mandatory for individuals or organizations but are intended to offer general direction.After consultation and clarification from Heritage Canada and communication with trustees, LDSB schools with only one flagpole will fly the Progress Pride flag under the Canadian flag for the balance of this school year.  Limestone’s goal will be to increase the number of schools with more than one flagpole and/or the addition of yardarms to existing flagpoles to display more than the Canadian flag. Until this goal is achieved, we will fly the Progress Pride flag under the Canadian flag at sites with only one flagpole.Displaying the Progress Pride Flag is a way for LDSB to show support for the 2SLGBTQ+ community. This recognition does not diminish our respect for Canada’s national flag; rather, it reflects our commitment to ensuring that all students, staff, and families feel welcomed, valued, and respected in Limestone schools.Flying the Progress Pride Flag is one example of how LDSB demonstrates its inclusive culture. As a publicly funded school board, we have both a legal and moral responsibility to create learning environments where everyone can see themselves reflected and feel a sense of belonging.

<h2 class="editor-heading-h2">Technical Advisory Group (TAG) is Seeking Expression of Interest</h2>The Limestone District School Board is seeking expressions of interest from <a href="about:blank" class="editor-link">individuals</a><a href="#_msocom_1" class="editor-link">[EL1]</a>  interested in joining the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) in support of the ongoing Student Census 2025 project.The purpose of the Technical Advisory Group is to provide advice, perspectives, and recommendations related to the design of data collection methods, analysis, and the representation of results for LDSB’s Student Census. TAG plays a critical role in ensuring that multiple and diverse perspectives are applied to the interpretation of data, helping to minimize bias and strengthen the relevance and integrity of findings.We are seeking expressions of interest for the committee for the September 2026 to August 2028 term.  We welcome expressions of interest from all members of the Limestone community, including those who can help us fill the following vacancies:<ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">One to two parents of a Limestone student(s) who is not an employee of the LDSB</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">A Limestone school administrator</li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem">One or more Limestone secondary students</li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem">One community partner member who works alongside LDSB</li></ul>Experience in data collection, analysis, and/or reporting of identity‑based data is encouraged; however, individuals with a broad range of research or analysis backgrounds and/or lived experiences are encouraged to apply.
