This time of year is exciting not just because of the incredible learning that takes place but also because of the "end of year" field trips, activities and celebrations that are being planned to extend much of this learning. All of this will make these last few months of the 2025-2026 school year pass very quickly!

Many of our field trips and end of year celebrations will take place in parks, conservation areas and camps. In addition, much of our school yard is grassy and the back field of our school yard has been re-opened to Intermediate students after being closed for much of the winter. We kindly remind you to perform regular tick checks on your children to ensure that everyone remains healthy and happy.

One of the big events in April will be our drama presentation entitled "The Wild Robot" which will take place on Wednesday April 29th, 2026. This very large group of thespians have moved rehearsals from the front foyer to the gym as their performance day gets closer and closer. We are all super excited to see the show and celebrate our young performers. Thank you to Mrs. Jen Zwiers and her amazing team.

We are also very excited that some of our young artists will be preparing work to be displayed at the "Neurovibes" presentation being offered on April 29th at 5:00 p.m. at the Queen's BioScience Building. Thank you to Ms. Ashley Chapman's Grade 3/4 class who have volunteered to send some special art work to be put on display! Well done, Grade 3/4!

All of our classes from Grade 2 - Grade 6 have been invited to take part in the Celebration of Dance event on May 6th, 2026. The Celebration of Dance is an annual event intended to engage young people in an activity where they can develop confidence, be active and just be themselves. Thank you to Ms. LaRochelle for leading our school in this popular and inclusive activity.

As mentioned in our previous newsletter, coaches are also spending their lunch offering skill and training sessions in the gym for our athletes hoping to join the Junior Basketball or one of the other many sports on offer in the next few months. Thank you to all of our coaches and athletes for their dedication to physical wellness and healthy competition!

Just a reminder to all families that the staff at Southview PS will be engaged in a Professional Learning Day on Friday April 17th, 2026. Not only is the weather changing quickly and dramatically, but we are also entering the last third of the school year where teachers begin the final push towards June. There are a number of events, competitions and academic activities that have been planned to take place over the next couple of months, in addtion to the planning that has already started for the 2026-2027 school year.

Congratulations to our Skills Ontario - Intermediate Construction Skills Group that placed first in the District competition held at St Lawrence college last month. This group of four very talented students, led by Mr. Gallupe, will be moving on to the Provincial competition on May 3/4 in Toronto. Well done and good luck to this amazing group of achievers!

The Running Club has started their Spring training schedule and will continue to provide an opportunity for those students who are keen to get into competition form for the Road Race, and Track and Field Season. Our students are dedicating much of their break time to getting into top physical condition in order to compete in our Spring sport lineup. All of the upcoming dates for the Road Race and Track and Field season are included in the "What's Ahead" section below. Thank you to our coaches and well done to our athletes.

The weather has not cooperated at all for our Grade 3s and 3/4s who have been rained out on three separate occasions for their trip to Gould Lake . Fortunately, our Outdoor Education Team is exceedingly flexible and has now offered this group an alternative date in April/May which should improve the likelihood that the trip will actually happen (and it also increases the program choices!).

All of the staff at Southview PS, would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our students and their families a very happy and and relaxing four day long weekend from April 3-6, 2026. What's Happening at Southview PS - Week 25, March 2026

Before we get into that, we would like to offer a huge thank you and congratulations to our French Language teaching team for the wonderful Carnaval celebration they ran on February 26th, 2026. This event takes an enormous amount of preparation, including teaching about Carnaval and French culture in the classrooms, writing grant proposals, purchasing food and prizes, organizing all of the events, advertising and generating excitement regarding the festival and preparing the gym on celebration day! Every student in the school got involved in the games and activities over the course of the day. A highlight of the entire event had to be watching our three Grade 8 and Grade 7/8 classes take charge and run the event for our younger people under the supervision of the French team. What an opportunity for our most senior students to work on developing their executive functioning skills and show terrific role modelling and leadership. Thank you to all and well done!

On the 9th and 10th of March (and then again on March 23rd and 24th), our Grade 3 students are travelling to the Queen's University Pool to participate in the Livesaving Societies' survival training program called "Swim to Survive". The Society defines the minimum skills needed to survive an unexpected fall into deep water. These are expressed in a skill sequence in the Canadian Swim to Survive standard:

ROLL into deep water

TREAD water for one minute

SWIM 50 metres

These skills are the focus of the Swim to Survive program which is aimed primarily at Grade 3 children within the Limestone District School Board. We are very grateful for the funding available to run the Swim to Survive program free of charge for our students.

On March 11th, Ms. Chapman and Ms. Brown will be taking their classes to the Gould Lake Conservation are for the Winter Program. Both classes will be spending the day outdoors, participating in many Winter activites which culminate in a Cook Out that includes the preparation of hotdogs and smores!

The Running Club has started their Spring training schedule. The Running Club provides an opportunity for those students who are keen to get an early start in their preparation for the Road Race, and Track and Field Season. Our students are dedicating much of their break time to getting into top physical condition in order to compete in our Spring sport lineup. Thank you to our coaches and well done to our athletes.

Special Event Happening this Week!

You Are Invited: Community Event: An Evening with Monique Gray Smith, Author of Braiding Sweetgrass for Young Adults – March 12, 2026

Students, families, staff, and community members are invited to a free in-person evening with author Monique Gray Smith.
Dear Families,

As we enter the spring season and final third of the school year, we are reminded of this season’s promise of renewal and growth, and the key role schools and families have together in supporting student learning and well-being. This time of year brings many opportunities for learning both inside and outside of the classroom, along with the return of outdoor extracurricular activities. While this week has been very wet and rainy, the warmer temperatures of spring are upon us. I would like to take this opportunity to share a few important updates with you:

P.A.
