Dear Southview Famillies,
It has been a rainy week, but we have managed to get outside for most of our recesses, and even found time in between showers for road race and track and field practice! Please remember that unless it is heavy rain, students will go outside for recess twice a day. Raincoats and splashpants are very important on wet, muddy days, so that students don't have to sit in class soaking wet!
There is lots of information this week about a variety of upcoming events in and around Southview, including Kindergarten registration, school attendance, School Climate Survey and more. Please read through the newsletter to keep up with all that is happening around the school.
As always, we value our partnership with our families. We know that by working together we can best meet the needs of our students. If you have any questions about your child's education, please reach out to their educators or to the office. Thanks for your support,
Sincerely,
Greg Seiveright (Principal), Jen Cole (VP), and the Southview Team

We continue to see a high rate of student absences at Southview. Since the pandemic, schools across Canada have struggled with absenteeism. A recent CBC news article, available here, highlight the scope and impacts of the problem. Already this year, 200 Southview students have missed 20 days of school or more, which is 10% of the full year. Over a child's 10 years of elementary school at Southview, missing 20 days each year would mean a full school year missed!
When children miss a day they miss important literacy and math learning, and can fall behind on lessons that build from day to day. The whole class can suffer as teachers need to re-teach lessons and move more slowly to ensure everyone keeps up. Students who are regularly late, even if it is only 10 -15 minutes, often miss critical reading instruction, which often happens first thing in the morning. Children who attend school regularly generally have better emotional health, better relationships with teachers and stronger social connections,
We know that children need to stay home when they are sick, and that there are many different family situations which can lead to lates and absences. Please contact the school if you need support with attendance issues. Let's work together and get every student here every day!

Southview will once again be participating in Jump Rope for Heart this year, on May 3. This annual fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation involves students getting active by skipping rope, shooting hoops, and lots of other heart-healthy activities. If you would like, you can make a donation to our school campaign at https://jumpropeforheart.crowdchange.ca/49695 . Thank you for your support!

The Limestone District School Board has released a document entitled 'Prohibiting the Use of the N-Word', which is available on the Board Website at the link above. This document complements the Racial Slurs and Epithets Memo which was released last year, as a part of our ongoing anti-racist work. Over the next two weeks, Mr. Seiveright will share information from this document with all students in grades 4-8. This information is being shared with all students in the Board (gr. 4-12). This will be a brief presentation with an opportunity for questions. We recognize that this may be upsetting for some students, and we will help families to support all students as we continue our anti-racist work.

Over the past few weeks we have had several generous donations to our Food Sharing program. We would like to thank the Napanee No Frills, Fool's Kitchen, and the office staff of Lennox Generating Station. These donations will help support our ability to provide healthy snacks and lunches for any student at Southview who needs them. We greatly appreciate your generosity - Thank you!

Who We Are: SAC is made up of a group of parent/guardian volunteers who are passionate about supporting our children's learning at Southview. Our Fundraising Team works hard to offer a variety of activities and fundraisers to make an impact in our children's education.
Did you know that every hot lunch you order raises money that SAC uses to support the Southview community? Through our fundraising efforts, we have provided the school with new sports equipment, jerseys, teaching supplies and supported learning in many ways.
- SAC is busy planning for our Spring Carnival. This will also be a free event to Southview families. There will be lots of games and activities, and we have confirmed that Big D's and Kona Ice will be setting up and selling food/drinks. As a bonus, each company has offered a kickback to the school with every purchase! SAVE THE DATE: June 6, 2024
Supporting our school doesn't have to cost money. We are always looking for volunteers to help run our hot lunch program, book fairs and craft sales. If you're interested in getting involved, reach out to the school and find out how you can get started.

The final Hot Lunch order window for 2024 is now open! Hot Lunches are available every Friday at first Nutrition Break. You must order through School Day by the order closing date. Once you log into School Day you can select Products, and order for one week at a time or for the whole term at once. We can not accept late orders, as our vendors need our information in time to order their supplies.
Please note that if a child is absent for hot lunch, we can not give refunds, and their order will be distributed to another student through our Food Sharing program. If there happens to be a Snow Day on a Hot Lunch day we will reschedule the Hot Lunch, so students won't miss out but you will have to send them with a lunch!
Dates, menu and costs from April - June are listed below. Please note we have added three Milkshake Mondays - the third one in June may be a treat from School Council for all students!

The Métis Nation of Ontario has expanded and is providing supports in Napanee, at 113 Unit 4A Richmond Blvd, Napanee. The Napanee office now offers the Métis Family Wellbeing Program: this Program is designed to provide a variety of family specific programming to help address the needs of Métis families who are working to heal from violence, have children who are in the care of family services, or have youth who are involved in the justice system.
Through the Program, MFWB Coordinators work to develop individual and family wellness plans which are specific to the unique needs of each person. From there MFWB Coordinators can facilitate access to peer counselling, provide advocacy and referral services, help clients navigate the system, and help to connect them with traditional knowledge and practices. These activities are offered in both one on one and group settings. The activities are designed to help divert children and youth away from high risk behaviours. The Program also offers educational gatherings which are open to the community and provided within culturally safe spaces which are developed and provided by the Program.
Referrals can be made to Coordinator Corrin Harris by phone at 613-328-3958 or by email at [email protected] and will be accepted by agencies or self referrals. Please note that children, parents/caregivers do not need to be Indigenous or hold status or citizenship to receive supports through the Métis Family Wellbeing Program.

Reporting Absences
All student absences should be reported through the SafeArrival system. Please do not call the school directly to report an absence. You can use the SchoolMessenger app, the Safe Arrival website, or the toll free number listed in the graphic below to record an absence.
Reporting Lates: New for the 2023-2024 school year, parents/caregivers are able to report late arrivals using the new Late Arrival option, including the expected arrival time to school. When a student arrives, they are expected to sign in at office and staff make the amendment in our student information system. When a student leaves early, again they are expected to sign out (with parental permission) and again the amendment is made in our system. This method allows us to best track student attendance to ensure safety.
You can find more information at: https://www.limestone.on.ca/families/report_a_student_absence
